Calabash Tree "Miracle Fruit" Potential for Cancer Treatment

The Calabash tree (scientifically: Crescentia cujete) is a small evergreen tree that grows up to 52 feet tall and produces unusual fruits: large, round, and hard – hang directly beneath the branches and it looks like a young coconut fruit and hard as coconut fruit skin.

Calabash tree has been used by local communities as a remedy for several illnesses

In some countries, the fruit is used to make small vessels for serving or drinking - natural bowl. In Cuba, dried fruit is commonly used as a coffee cup by rural farmers.

In the Southern Philippines, it is called Miracle Tree of General Santos City because of its folkloric healing.  Quite popular because of its medicinal properties. As it contains more vitamin B1, vitamin C, calcium, iron, sodium, and potassium element.

And most Filipinos call the fruit, a miracle fruit.

CALABASH FRUIT PREVENTS CANCER FROM SPREAD
In a study conducted by Biology students of Notre Dame of Dadiangas University in General Santos City.

The Calabash fruit and leaf extracts contain flavonoids (a diverse group of phytonutrients - plant chemicals) such as quercetin and anthraquinone. Both are important phytochemicals for antiangiogenic activities, a process that inhibits the growth and development of new blood vessels in the body.

Quercetin is a medicine to treat conditions of the heart and blood vessels and prevent cancer. It is also used for arthritis, bladder infections, and diabetes.
NOTE: WebMD warns people that there is a shred of limited scientific evidence to support these uses of Quercetin.

Anthraquinone used for centuries for medical applications, for example, as laxatives and antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory agents. Current therapeutic indications include constipation, arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and cancer. { source }

In that research, the findings are remarkable:

In that laboratory experiments, the researchers have analyzed the effects of Calabash extracts (fruit and leaf extracts) to duck eggs. The extracts have successfully halted the formation of new blood vessels as shown by the lower number of branching points in ducks embryo compared to the control samples. 

With these findings, researchers claimed that calabash extracts have the ability to prevent blood vessel growth and development and could be used to help prevent the spread of cancer cells in the human body. Researchers also believe that a calabash tree could be a natural resource that can be used in the development of cheaper and locally available anti-cancer treatments. { source }

That study has won 3rd prize during the Gruppo Medica Award for an outstanding undergraduate thesis in herbal medicine during the 7th Philippine National Health Research System (PNHRS) Week held in Plaza del Norte Hotel and Convention Center, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.

Although it is tested only on Duck eggs, it still needs more study concerning health issues.

CALABASH FRUIT LOWERS BLOOD SUGAR

In another school study in Davao City, the Davao Medical School Foundation, Calabash fruit can lower blood sugar on the tested rabbits.

Researchers administered a Calabash fruit decoction, mineral water, and a drug(Metformin) for diabetics on the animals.

It was revealed that Calabash fruit juice and Metformin decreased the amount of blood sugar in the Rabbit's body. While Mineral water has no lowering effect on rabbits.

Calabash Tree is native to Africa, South America, & West Indies. Notably, in Saint Lucia, the Calabash tree is considered a national tree. And, is naturalized in India.
